Why Trust Our Picks

Our testing team includes dedicated hammock campers who have abandoned tents entirely, as well as traditional tent campers who use hammocks for rest stops and supplemental sleeping. See also: best SUP touring routes. For more, see our guide to best lightweight tents for backpacking. We have hammock camped in tropical jungles, temperate forests, alpine meadows, and urban parks across four continents. We know the difference between a hammock that works for a backyard nap and one that provides genuine backcountry shelter.

We tested each hammock across a minimum of 10 nights of actual sleeping use, evaluating comfort, temperature regulation, moisture management, and durability. All prices and specifications were verified in March 2026.

What to Look For in a Camping Hammock

Weight Capacity and Size

A hammock rated for 400 lbs does not mean it is only for people weighing 400 lbs — the capacity includes your body weight plus gear, movement forces, and a safety margin. A 200-lb person should use a hammock rated for at least 350 lbs. Double-wide hammocks (5 to 6 feet wide) provide significantly more comfort for sleeping because they allow you to lie at an angle, creating a flatter sleeping position.

Material and Breathability

Nylon taffeta is the standard hammock fabric because it balances strength, weight, and breathability. Higher denier counts (70D) are more durable but less breathable than lower deniers. For tropical and summer use, breathability matters more than durability. For backcountry use where the hammock contacts rough bark and rocks, durability matters more. For more, see our guide to beginner’s guide to ski touring and backcountry skiing.

Suspension System

The suspension system — straps, carabiners, and/or ropes — is what connects the hammock to trees or other anchor points. Tree-friendly straps that distribute load across wide webbing protect bark and are required or strongly preferred in most camping areas. Budget hammocks sometimes include straps; premium brands typically sell them separately.

Complete Shelter vs. Standalone Hammock

A standalone hammock provides a sleeping surface only. A complete shelter system adds a bug net, rain fly, and sometimes insulation. Backpackers who want to replace a tent need a complete system, while car campers and casual users can start with a standalone hammock and add accessories over time. Our off-grid camping guide covers shelter planning in detail.

How We Chose These Products

We eliminated any hammock that failed to support its rated capacity during our load testing, any fabric that showed significant stretching after 30 nights of use, and any suspension system that damaged tree bark. For more, see our guide to best inflatable SUPs for travel. We then ranked by the combination of comfort, weight, durability, value, and versatility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hammock camping actually comfortable?

Yes, when done correctly. The key is using a hammock wide enough to lie at a diagonal angle, which creates a flatter sleeping surface. A 9-foot or longer hammock with at least 5 feet of width allows diagonal sleeping that most people find as comfortable as a sleeping pad in a tent.

Do I need insulation underneath when hammock camping?

Yes, in temperatures below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Your sleeping bag compresses underneath you in a hammock, eliminating its insulating value. An underquilt that hangs beneath the hammock provides insulation without compression. Alternatively, a sleeping pad inside the hammock works but tends to shift during sleep.

Can I hammock camp anywhere?

Not everywhere. Many campgrounds and wilderness areas have specific rules about hammock use, primarily related to tree protection. Always use wide tree-friendly straps, never wrap ropes or cords around trees, and check local regulations before hanging. Some areas above treeline or in desert environments simply lack suitable anchor points.
