What to Look For in a Packraft

Hull Design: Self-Bailing vs. Standard

In whitewater, water enters the packraft on drops and in rapids. A standard hull accumulates water in the cockpit, slowing the raft, lowering the center of gravity, and creating a soggy, unstable experience on repeated rapids. A self-bailing floor has drain holes in the hull floor that expel water as quickly as it enters — transformative for anything above Class II. Self-bailing floors add weight and cost but are non-negotiable for serious whitewater use. For flatwater and mild moving water, a standard hull is lighter and simpler.

Material and Durability

Packraft material determines both durability and packability. TPU-coated nylon is the current premium standard — used by Kokopelli and other expedition-grade brands, it provides high abrasion resistance against river rocks, puncture resistance from submerged debris, and UV stability for multi-year use. PVC constructions are cheaper and heavier; nylon-only constructions pack smaller but sacrifice abrasion resistance. Ripstop fabric (as in the Klymit LWD) is appropriate for flatwater use where rock contact is infrequent.

Packed Weight and Volume

The Klymit LWD packs to the size of a 1.5-liter water bottle and weighs 44 oz — it genuinely disappears into a backpack. The Kokopelli Nirvana weighs 9.7 lbs and packs to sleeping-bag size — still backpack-able, but not trivially so. The weight penalty of an expedition packraft over a flatwater dinghy is approximately 6 lbs, which is a meaningful pack weight increase for ultralight thru-hikers but a reasonable trade-off for river routes with Class III-IV sections.

Stability and Paddling Performance

Entry-level packrafts are wide and stable but track poorly in crosswinds — the Klymit LWD’s single-chamber circular hull will spin in a breeze on open water. Expedition packrafts have tuned hull geometry, thigh straps for whitewater control, and optional skegs that improve straight-line tracking dramatically. For anything beyond sheltered flatwater crossings, hull design quality is worth the investment.

How We Chose These Products

We excluded packrafts from brands without documented field use records from independent expedition accounts, rafts without at minimum 350 lb weight capacity, and any design using single-wall PVC construction without independent abrasion resistance data. We were particularly conservative about the unbranded TPU packraft on this list — its inclusion is explicitly noted as a budget flatwater option with acknowledged quality control limitations.
