Carbon fiber poles are lighter (8–10 oz/pair vs 10–14 oz/pair for equivalent aluminum) and stiffer, which translates to more energy return on each plant. However, carbon breaks catastrophically on lateral impact — a hard twist on a river crossing or a fall onto a pole at an angle can snap a carbon shaft cleanly. Aluminum bends rather than breaking, which is often survivable in the field. On technical off-trail terrain with river crossings, alpine scrambling, or high fall risk, aluminum provides meaningful field-repair advantage over carbon. On established trails with low fall risk, carbon’s weight savings compounds over 500+ miles.

Fixed Length vs. Adjustable

Fixed-length poles are lighter and have fewer failure points (no locking mechanisms to jam, no sliding sections to fatigue). They require precise sizing at purchase and cannot be shortened for packing without disassembly. Adjustable poles allow fine-tuning of height for uphill and downhill terrain, can be shared between differently-sized hikers, and can be stored in checked luggage or longer carry-on bags. Folding Z-Pole vs. Telescoping
